What Is PTSD and How Is It Diagnosed.

What Is PTSD?

What Is PTSD and how does it begin? How does fear gets imbedded in our minds. I recently I was in a head-on collision. I approached an intersection. I didn’t see a stop sign, so I plodded through a bit cautiously, but not carefully enough, as another car was careening in the opposite direction. I t-boned him and was practically knocked unconscious. I sat still in the car for an interminably long time before I realized what had happened. I assessed myself. Could I even get out of the car?

What Is PTSD and How Does It Begin?

The impact of PTSD began when my head apparently went forward and then smashed into the seatbelt casing above me. Besides the fright and the shock, I didn’t feel any major pain, like a break or see bleeding. I heard a knock on the window.

“Are you alright?”

Then I saw the car I hit gingerly moving to the side of the street. I didn’t think I should move my car, but I didn’t want to cause another wreck, so I turned into the side street.

The man I collided with said, “Why didn’t you stop?”

Honestly, I didn’t know until I turned around to see the stop sign was blocked by a large moving truck. Four or five men from the truck were checking to see how I was and to see what had happened.

I noticed a police car at the corner. A policeman walked toward me at the same time I was confronting the man in the moving truck: “You were blocking the stop sign,” I said. “I couldn’t see it.”

He replied, “That’s not my fault.”

From behind me, the policeman intervened: “Yes, it is your fault. Don’t move your truck until I tell you.” He continued to check the scene to make sure no one needed emergency help.

How PTSD imbeds in the brain: After I was instructed to take a lot of pictures, perhaps an hour later, another police car arrived to take our statements. Afterwards, I was able to travel home at a very slow pace. My car was not damaged bad enough to prevent driving.

I noticed immediately that I was shaken. I wasn’t even sure I should be driving. Suddenly, I began to feel achy and my neck and back were throbbing. I wondered if I should have gone to the ER as the policeman suggested. In that moment, I realized I should have, but I just wanted to be in my home comforted by my husband.

The Post-traumatic shock (PTSD) began soon after. After I got home, I called the woman who lives above me. I asked her if she could take me to a walk-in clinic. She immediately came down to help.

My husband was on his way home early from work to be with me. The time was about 5:15 p.m. and it was two days before Christmas. The traffic was horrible. Cars beeping, trucks trying to get in our lane. It was much colder than normal in Florida, already getting dark, and it was drizzling now. Drivers were acting crazy, as normal at this time of year.

I noticed that every time a car came close, my entire body quaked as if I was in the accident all over again. My neighbor and I checked two walk-in clinics and both were closed because of Christmas. By the time we arrived at the second one, I was exhausted from the fear. My heart hurt emotionally and avoiding my panic wasn’t a choice.. Every moment I was confronted by the same debilitating fear as from the accident.

I asked my friend to take me back home. If I needed to go to the hospital, I would have to go later, after Dave got home from work.

Now, every subsequent time I get in the car, I have the same feeling. Depending on how close cars come to me, I get shaken and my heart races.

This is PTSD. If I continue to have this, I know, I should get some help. Long-term PTSD can be debilitating. Because I work with people all the time with these symptoms, it’s clear what I should do.

The purpose of this blog is to help you understand if you have PTSD symptoms. Of course, you should see a knowledgable practitioner to help.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT PEACE OF MIND

We give away our peace of mind every time we react emotionally to inevitable change. Peace is yours to keep, not give away. So, if you are not experiencing peace, it’s up to you to share why you are anxious with yourself by carrying on a self dialogue. Yes, that’s right. Question yourself. Work it out together with all the parts of your mind (the good, bad, and the ugly). These are the times when we will be closest to our loved ones and also have a great deal of alone time. Use it to your spiritual and physical advantage.

Some friendly reminders about Peace:

  • You are made in the image and by the grace of Peace.
  • Peace doesn’t comprehend pandemonium.
  • Peace of mind is gentle.
  • Peace does not judge you or others.
  • Peace promotes calm and love.

Narcissistic abuse is a form of emotional and psychological abuse. It is primarily inflicted by individuals who have either narcissistic personality disorder (NPD, which is characterized by a lack of empathy), or antisocial personality disorder (ASPD, also known as sociopaths or psychopaths), and is associated with the absence of a conscience.  More than enough fish in the sea.

Poco a Poco

I learn a lot from my dog. Everything in his life is just a tiny bit different than life was yesterday. Every day he manages to wake up at the exact same time. When he comes in from outside, he expects a treat. When you give him a tiny treat, he sits there with a look on his face that says, you are cheating me.  When I sit on the couch, he will jump up next to me. When I try to brush him, he looks at me with dismay. When he needs to go out, he goes to the door and cries just a little.

Just a Little Different than Yesterday

I used to think that instead of life being just a little different than the day before, it should be better than yesterday. This theory has gotten me into hot water when it comes to expectation. Life is more like the stock market. You make good investments, but you can not decide where the market is going on any given day. You live with your good and bad choices, and hope that tomorrow will be better. At least, that’s what I discovered recently when my mom died.

Just a Little Different than Yesterday

Grace extends to me in many ways. I know this. I want to be okay. I don’t want to be grieving any longer than I need to about anything. However, I can’t change a process that is much like a body convalescing from a serious operation. You can’t tell a bone break to heal hastily. It takes as long as it takes. Neither can you expect your emotions to feel better when you decide they should.

Lately, I’ve been waking up wondering if the same day is going to keep happening over and over again until I manage to heal. I have many clients who come to me daily and ask me to help them heal of emotional trauma. I tell them that the best you can do is look for your blessings every day and don’t waste your time looking at your past. My life often mirrors my clients.

When past pain stares me down from the gun muzzle every day, I begin to wonder how to turn off the pain and get on with life. Again, healing takes time. I remind myself this. I can’t make my broken heart mend in a day. Nor can I change my life on a dime. Life takes time. Love takes more time. Healing takes a lifetime, it seems.

However, I remember breaking my arm when I was young. It doesn’t hurt anymore. In fact, at same arm is very strong. I remember a painful divorce from the man to whom I thought I’d spend my life. I don’t feel sad about hi now. I remember my dad dying. I don’t feel sad about that now, either.

We are living, breathing humans with emotions who are far more intelligent than any other mammal. With intelligence comes reason, deduction, and memory. With these highly developed skills, we must take our healing time to the next level. We must allow our souls to inch past our pain and wait in joyful expectation for tomorrow’s better day.

I wait cautiously for the next day, never expecting a bad day, However, expecting a new day with new chances to be strong.

When it Really Matters

When you reach 50, when your health really matters, you need to have a plan for the future—to take care of yourself when you reach a place in time when you can’t take care of yourself. You also need to take heed as to what physicians and caregivers tell you about impending health problems as you get older.

When it Really Matters

As I watched my mother gain years, I helped her through many health problems, until I couldn’t help anymore. When it mattered, Mom had to be the one who cared if her blood sugars were too high or if she ate too much cholesterol-laden food or salt for heart health. However, she decided, most often, that she wanted what she wanted, right then. The future didn’t matter.

When it Really Matters

That is, until the future arrived. Mom eventually lost her eye site, when it really mattered. She began to lose her feet and toes from diabetic neuropathy, and there was nothing any of us could do to help, except be by her side when life got blurry and heavy laden with pain and illness.

I write this because I see clients every day who are more concerned about wealth and having a relationship instead of maintaining a healthy mind and body. These people forget about a bigger picture. Yes, relationship is great, if it’s the right one. But if you find a relationship in your later years, you will want to be healthy for it. Trust me. I got married when I was 55. And now, I think about longevity and holding on to the good that we created together.

Take care of your soul and your body. You will thank yourself when you get to the age when it really matters.

When Healing Flows like Living Water through your being, you’ll notice you feel led and connected, sleep better, your mind stays affixed on positive things, and you’ll even want to cook better, healthier food to protect your body. Are you looking for help with anxiety or are you bored at home.

Try this yoga practice below on YouTube I made just for this purpose or give me a call for a 10 minute consultation. I’d love to work through your stress at this time with you.

The process is so simple, it doesn’t make sense that it could result in such a vast change in mind. You could do some seated yoga. I actually made 3 different yoga videos on YouTube you could go to now and enjoy how great you’ll feel if you spend just a little time getting your body free of stress. But, I can’t do it for you. This article about it can make you do it. You  must be a self-started at home, as well as work. Set your mind to a clear schedule of things to do. This would be a brilliant time to learn a new language or clean out the closets.

The Physiology of Hypnotherapy:

By going into a subconscious, light sleep or trance, a hypnotists helps find the pathways connecting your outside stimulus to your negative thoughts (food, smoking, anxiety). The work begins in the frontal cortex of your brain

Disconnect the root cause (stress, relationship problems, no quality ME time) at the foot of the pathway (the place where our response to triggers happens) and build a healthy, new pathway to positive outcomes in your life—a new story for tomorrow.
