Fighting Addiction from Food to Crack is necessary in a Ready-Set-Go world. Though it seems that everyone has his or her own addictions, ranging from common to life-threatening ones. We have coffee addictions, gaming addiction, gambling, food, drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, pot, and then the stronger drugs, sex addiction, and over-the-counter prescriptions. Though some are less severe than others, all can lead to other, worse addictive behaviors. Here’s why.

A simple addiction to food can worsen in a time like we just experienced with Covid. If you already suffer from limiting your food consumption, then put yourself in a one-bedroom apartment with a spouse and watch how much more you eat. If you started off with a food addiction and went on a cruise to get away, chances are you are going to see food is one things you can do “extra” because it’s time to throw caution to the wind. Most people gain 7 pounds on a week’s cruise, because of this reasoning. When I went on a cruise, I spent the majority of the time eating and relaxing. I gained 3 lbs, but I was also very aware of overdoing it. Even with that in mind and daily exercise, I still packed on the pounds.

Anything that you could overdo, even healthy things, you will probably do at some point in your life in excess. For instance, I realized this past week that I have been buying 12 yogurts a week and sometimes eating 3 in a day. Of course, the amount of sugars in them are too large and the fat is also too much. Yes, this is better than polishing off a dozen doughnuts, but still not good as I’m trying to maintain a 35-pound weight loss a few months ago.
What frustrations, exactly, are we hiding behind with these addictions. In my work as a hypnotist, I find that most people use habits to smokescreen a hard emotion or life situation. When a smoker comes to me for help quitting from a 40-year addiction to 2 packs of cigarettes a day, you had better believe I do much questioning about when they use their vice. This will tell me what they escape from, how they perceive a cigarette, and how much company they need with that feeling. Ultimately, if you don’t correct the smokescreen, the person will never quit the habit.
When you look at harder addictions (although I don’t know too many addictions harder to stop than cigarettes), often people have to get away from their friends and family to look inside for the strength to quit. Then once they quit in a quiet and calming situation, they must learn to maintain the quitting after they re-enter their hectic lives. This is often when drug addicts come to me for help. I had one 28 year old exclaim that his addiction is connected to music and hanging out with his friends. “Then you need new friends,” I say. He looked at me with cross-eyes. How will I find new friends at this point in my life?
I usually guarantee them that the friends that they get high with will certainly find someone else, because addicts become narcissistic around their habits and feeding their vice. “And you,” I say, “Need to find people who love and support you that don’t do drugs. It’s that simple.”
Same thing goes with friends who always want you to go out and drink. Is this really friendship or codependency?
Ultimately, surround yourself with people who encourage the opposite of addictive things. Find friends who have the same hobbies, have a spiritual life, spend time doing artistic things. All of these extracurriculars help socialize you without addictions. When you change habit in your life, make sure yo also change the story around the habit, as well.
