Bending Over Backwards

I have worked with many bending-over-backwards clients over the years who—with a big smile—call themselves “givers” or “caretakers.” They say caregiving serves them well, because they feel happy when they are giving. Suddenly, though, the formula isn’t working anymore. Anxiety and depression has overwhelmed them.

When you bend and bend over to take care of people who get used to sucking out your energy, eventually you break. I did. The clients I shared as an example at the beginning of this blog did. I’m sure many of you reading this bend far too much. 
I am also fairly certain that the majority of these same people are not caregivers as much as they are empaths. Empaths feel another person’s vibrations. (Check out the 13 qualities to the right of this blog.)They are ultra-sensitive to what other’s need, making their super power caregiving. 
Listen, Empaths, we are not meant to bend over and stretch past the constraints of our own lives to satisfy one needy person. Empaths are here on this Earth to help heal the entire Earth and the people hurting on it.

My Experience with Bending Over Backwards


I, too, spent the majority of my life leading with my inner yogi, backbending to take care of others, especially avoidant people. I’m not sure why. I am certainly a nice enough looking man with an average body. However, the “kind” of person I wanted to serve was the archetype of the person who didn’t like me when I was a child. In fact, this same time of muscle jock was mostly mean in public and somewhat nice when we were alone. 
I noticed early that the more I helped each of these narcissists and was nice to them, the nicer they would treat me. Sometimes, even the straightest of straight guys would fall for me. I definitely knew how to manipulate men. Honestly, when I look back at those times, I feel shame. 

I learned a lot about me in those moments, though. I would sometimes cry on my way home from someone’s home I thought I loved for a long period of time, but knew I wasn’t being loved back to the extent I needed to feel whole. I was certainly appreciated. But I attracted men who didn’t have the capacity to share heartfelt feelings. They were simply empty inside, but very willing to take all of the power I was willing to give. However, because they felt secure and nice in my arms, I kept the relationships moving forward… until I couldn’t anymore.

We give away our peace of mind every time we react emotionally to inevitable change. Peace is yours to keep, not give away. So, if you are not experiencing peace, it’s up to you to share why you are anxious with yourself by carrying on a self dialogue. Yes, that’s right. Question yourself. Work it out together with all the parts of your mind (the good, bad, and the ugly). These are the times when we will be closest to our loved ones and also have a great deal of alone time. Use it to your spiritual and physical advantage.
